Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to offer Anthony Gordon a lucrative new contract that would make him the highest paid player at the club, amidst interest from their Premier League competitors.

The 23 year old England winger was previously targeted by Liverpool during the summer transfer window after Newcastle approached them regarding a potential deal in an effort to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Despite this, Gordon decided to stay at St. James’ Park and has had an impressive start to the current season, prompting the Magpies to consider offering him a substantial new contract.

As initially reported by The Mail, Newcastle are prepared to propose a deal to Gordon worth just under £9million annually, a salary that would surpass that of the club’s current top earner, Bruno Guimaraes.

Preliminary discussions have already taken place with the player’s representatives, who continues to be associated with Liverpool and is now also drawing attention from Arsenal.

It has been suggested that Newcastle might contemplate selling Gordon, who was open to joining a Champions League club this past summer, next year if he does not agree to a new contract.

While it is uncertain whether Liverpool would renew their interest in Gordon following their recent acquisition of Federico Chiesa, the prospect of interest from Arsenal could potentially sway the winger in the upcoming months.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has played it cool amidst the swirling rumours that Anthony Gordon could have been snapped up by Liverpool before last month’s transfer deadline, choosing not to delve into speculation. However, he did emphasise the club’s commitment to retaining their top talent.

Reflecting on Gordon’s condition back in August, Howe remarked: “I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game.”

“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.”

On the possibility of Gordon’s move to Liverpool, Howe maintained a pragmatic stance: “I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”
