Liverpool have reportedly disrupted Xabi Alonso’s transfer plans
Liverpool have reportedly denied Xabi Alonso the opportunity to strike a deal with the Reds ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline. Arne Slot has welcomed two new faces to his squad over the last few days and there is still time for more business to be done.
It was announced earlier this week that Liverpool had agreed to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, with the player set to move to Anfield next summer. On Thursday, they confirmed the arrival of Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for a fee of around £12.5million.
Liverpool could also look to sell players or loan them out before Friday’s deadline but it seems Tyler Morton will not be one of them. Bayer Leverkusen made an approach to sign the 21-year-old but were swiftly rebuffed by the Reds, according to The Telegraph.
Tyler Morton is expected to stay at Liverpool until at least January
It remains to be seen if Alonso will sanction a renewed offer for Morton, who spent last season on loan at Hull City. He chipped in with three goals and five assists for the Tigers and was a regular in midfield, making 41 appearances in all competitions.
Morton is now expected to stay at Anfield until at least January, according to Sky Sports. It suggests that any further bids from Leverkusen will be turned down by the Reds, leaving Alonso unable to bring the midfielder to Germany.
It comes five months after the Spaniard rejected the chance to manage Liverpool before Slot was appointed to replace Jurgen Klopp. The Merseyside giants were reportedly hoping to land Alonso but he politely declined, instead choosing to stay at Leverkusen.

Explaining his decision in an interview with TNT Sports, Alonso said: “There were many reasons. After one year, we’re building a team, we’re building a great spirit here. There were many reasons and so many players.
“The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together. I felt part of it. After one year, it didn’t feel like the right timing and that’s why I’m committed.”
Liverpool, meanwhile, have been tipped to offload some of their other fringe players before the end of the window. Barcelona are reportedly trying to sign Stefan Bajcetic on a season-long loan but the 19-year-old is more likely to join Red Bull Salzburg.
Calum Scanlon has already joined Millwall on loan until the end of the campaign, with that move being confirmed by Liverpool on Thursday.
