Liverpool have rebuffed an attempt from Real Madrid to secure the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool have rebuffed an attempt from Real Madrid to secure the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window.
The Spanish titans are keen on the Reds’ defender, but Liverpool have no intention of parting ways with the player whose contract expires this summer.
Despite Spanish media reports suggesting that Alexander-Arnold, 26, is ready for a move to Los Blancos, he has given no such indication to his current club.
The right-back has been in talks with his childhood team about a new contract at Anfield for several months, and there’s still optimism that he will extend his Merseyside stay rather than relocate to Madrid.
However, Real Madrid are intensifying their pursuit of the England international, and willing to pay a fee to secure him ahead of schedule. This strategy aims to tempt him away from Anfield and outmanoeuvre any other clubs potentially looking to swoop in if contract negotiations fall through.
From New Year’s Day, Alexander-Arnold is legally allowed to engage in discussions with overseas clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement for a summer move.
The exact figure Real Madrid are prepared to offer remains unknown, as does whether the La Liga champions will make another approach.
The Spanish side are particularly eager to bring Alexander-Arnold onboard this month following a season-ending ACL knee injury suffered by their star right-back Dani Carvajal in October.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has praised Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk for their focus amidst ongoing contract negotiations.
Despite their contracts expiring this summer, the trio have played pivotal roles in Liverpool’s impressive season, with the Reds now favourites for the Premier League title and progressing smoothly in the Champions League, not to mention a Carabao Cup semi-final on the horizon.
However, the resolve of these three players is set to be tested with an offer from a club aiming to secure their services before the season concludes.
