Liverpool admire Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon.
Liverpool could be given another opportunity to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, provided the 23-year-old doesn’t renew his contract with the Saudi-owned club.
The Daily Mail reports that Newcastle is set to offer Gordon a lucrative new deal that would make him the club’s highest earner, surpassing Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes who currently earns around £160,000 per week.
However, if Gordon doesn’t sign an extension by the end of this season, Newcastle may decide to sell him to avoid losing him on a free transfer. The former Everton star’s current contract only runs until 2026, having signed a three-and-a-half-year deal when he joined St James’ Park in January 2023.
It’s believed that Gordon was open to a move to Liverpool, the team he supported as a child, during the summer transfer window. Liverpool had agreed to pay £75million for the player and send Joe Gomez to Newcastle for £45m, but despite the deal being agreed in principle, Newcastle found other ways to generate cash and avoid PSR issues, subsequently cancelling the deal.
Should Gordon decide to part ways with Newcastle in the foreseeable future, it wouldn’t be surprising if Liverpool were to express interest in him once again. Arsenal are also reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation.
Anthony Gordon came close to joining Liverpool in the summer.
Given Gordon’s impressive performance this season, it’s likely that other Premier League clubs and those from further afield will also be vying for his signature.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has failed to rule out Gordon sealing a move to Liverpool in the future. “I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game,” Howe said in August.
“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.
“I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”
