Liverpool get update on long-term £70m transfer target as star responds to contract talk

Barcelona star Pedri is confident that he will extend his contract at the Camp Nou in the future, amid links with Liverpool. Financial issues have prompted several key players to be tipped to leave the Catalan giants over the summer, though Pedri does not appear likely to be one of those.

Liverpool are expected to undergo significant changes both on and off the pitch this summer. With Jurgen Klopp set to leave the club, and Ruben Amorim likely to succeed him on Merseyside, tactical changes are somewhat inevitable ahead of next season.

The Reds are also set to grant their new manager a significant budget to work with to bring in reinforcements where they deem necessary, with the aid of newly-appointed chiefs Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards.

Liverpool rebuilt their midfield last summer, allowing the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner to leave and replacing the trio with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

Further signings centrally have not been ruled out though, but the higher powers at Anfield may have to turn their attention away from Barca playmaker Pedri, despite speculation. The Spain international reportedly has a £70million release clause in his current contract which is a cause for concern among the higher powers given that the fee would be a snip of his true market value.

However, Pedri remains confident that the issue will be resolved sooner rather than later. Asked about his contract situation ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, Pedri explained: “In that regard, I am very calm. I’m delighted at the club and I know Barca will keep their word in what we spoke to, so I am very happy to stay at the club of my dreams.”

Pedri has made 17 La Liga appearances for Barca so far this season, with a recurring hamstring injury preventing him from playing a key role in the heart of Xavi’s side. The 21-year-old remains one of the best prospects in Europe regardless of his woes and he will be hoping that his injury concerns fizzle out over the summer, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that a new contract is now in the works and discussions will be held over the next few months.

Liverpool could be tempted to try their luck by activating the supposed release clause before Barcelona reaches an agreement with Pedri over a new deal, though Amorim may have other priorities upon his arrival at the club over the summer.
