There was a big grin on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s face pre-match
Liverpool fans lapped up Trent Alexander-Arnold’s confident grin as he arrived at Old Trafford ahead of their side’s 3-0 win over Manchester United. Arne Slot’s Reds were far superior against their M62 rivals last Sunday.
After his early goal was disallowed, Alexander-Arnold saw team-mate Luis Diaz bag a brace before the break to put them in the ascendency. Both of the first-half goals came from mistakes by Casemiro in his own half.
Erik ten Hag hauled him off at half-time – but it didn’t change the one-way traffic. And Kobbie Mainoo then made a mistake before Dominik Szoboszlai fed Mohamed Salah for the third.
The margin could even have widened as the visitors ultimately cruised to an easy win. Liverpool supporters are sure Alexander-Arnold sensed a win was on the cards long before the game started after footage showed him exiting the team bus pre-match amidst boos from the United fans outside the ground.
In a video posted on the club’s YouTube channel, Alexander-Arnold could be seen offering a broad smile in return as he strolled into the stadium. Viewers took it as a sign, with one commenting: “Trent knows we’re going to win when he gets off from the bus.”
Another echoed: “Trent already laughing from the entrance… knowing they gonna cook United.” With a third similarly adding: “That Trent smile when they booed him while he was entering…. he knew what kind of spanking was coming.”
Alexander-Arnold enjoyed himself at Old Trafford on Sunday
A fourth fan wrote: “Trent’s smile while getting booed walking from the bus. He knew what was coming.” And a fifth added: “Love the way Trent was laughing at their fans on the way in Old Trafford and on the way out.”
Alexander-Arnold was also booed post-match, echoing his on-pitch gesture to the away end with a three-finger salute to signify the final score as he left Old Trafford. The game didn’t come without its frustration for him, though.
The England international showed visible annoyance when being substituted off for Conor Bradley by Slot, marking the third time in as many games that he’s been pulled early. With his contract set to expire next summer, this latest development will do little to quell speculation about his future.
