Arne Slot’s Liverpool are ‘confident’ of sealing their first summer transfer.
Liverpool are reportedly confident that they will beat the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal to the signing of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi this summer. The centre-back enjoyed a stellar Euro 2024 campaign and is firmly in the sights of several top Premier League clubs.
Palace are unwilling to part ways with Guehi for a bargain price, having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, but the 24-year-old has just two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park. Keeping Guehi but failing to tie him down to a long-term deal may see the Eagles lose out financially if he does end up leaving the club beyond this summer.
Liverpool are yet to make a signing since Arne Slot arrived as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, but after Joel Matip departed on a free transfer, reinforcements have been sought across the backline.
TEAMTalk claim that the Reds are set to ramp up their pursuit of Guehi after his international campaign came to an end in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final. Talks have been held between the two clubs and Liverpool are aware of his £65million price tag. It is a fee that Liverpool are prepared to pay.
They want to move quickly on a deal in order to beat their Premier League rivals, while their recruitment team headed up by a returning Michael Edwards are ‘super confident’ that Guehi wants to move to Anfield.
The England breakout star is not prepared to disrespect his current club by forcing a move, however, and will wait on the outcome of further talks between Liverpool and Palace despite being supposedly excited about the potential transfer.
Liverpool transfer target Marc Guehi during the Euro 2024 final.
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has already given his blessing for the Reds to move on Guehi, having been won over by his displays in Germany to help England reach the final of Euro 2024.
“Marc Guehi is obviously a very good player, I can’t imagine Crystal Palace will want to lose another player,” Owen told Prime Casino. “He’s proven in this tournament that he’s very good. Left-sided centre-halves are like gold dust these days, people want them.
“He’s proven he can play at a really high level so I’ve no doubt he would be capable of playing for a club like Liverpool or Manchester United.”
Liverpool have also been linked with Guehi’s England team-mate, Anthony Gordon, who could yet leave Newcastle as a result of their financial woes regarding the top-flight’s profit and sustainability rules.
They were approached by the Magpies over a possible deal last month, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will consider a transfer any further for the boyhood Liverpool fan.
