Liverpool have asked the PGMOL to explain key decisions which went against them against Aston Villa.

Last weekend’s Anfield stalemate effectively ended the hosts’ bid to secure Champions League qualification as they were held 1-1 by the Midlanders.

But the Reds remain bewildered by key incidents in either half which centred on Cody Gakpo which referee John Brooks ruled against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The first saw Tyrone Mings only receive a yellow card for a studs-first tackle that ripped the Holland international’s shirt and left visible marks on his body.

VAR referee Tony Harrington reviewed the challenge at the time over possibly upgrading the Villa defender’s booking but the original caution still stood.

Gakpo was again involved in another incident during the second half when he appeared to have drawn Liverpool level only for VAR to rule it out for offside.

Brooks assessed the build-up to the goal on the pitchside monitor to assess Virgil van Dijk’s positioning despite Erzi Konsa getting a final touch on the ball.

Liverpool contacted the referees’ body on Monday for clarity on both incidents which came amid Klopp serving a touchline ban for criticising Paul Tierney.
