Jurgen Klopp seriously impressed by Liverpool teenager James McConnell

Jurgen Klopp was impressed with Liverpool teenager James McConnell’s performance today against Leicester City in Singapore.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Premier League manager was full of praise for the 18-year-old midfielder, who made a second-half cameo for Liverpool in their 4-0 win against the Foxes.

Playing in the no. 6 role in midfield, McConnell looked composed and confident in the position as Klopp continues to decide who should replace Fabinho in the area next season, with Curtis Jones starting the match in midfield.

With Romeo Lavia linked with a move to Liverpool, there’s a good chance that the Belgian could take the role if the Reds can secure the midfielder’s signature. Yet McConnell could now be a candidate after today’s performance.

The teenager is one of Liverpool’s most exciting prospects, and McConnell seemingly caught Klopp’s eye today in Asia as the midfield looked like a natural in midfield for the Merseyside giants.

Klopp said when asked about McConnell’s performance: “The boy James on the no. 6 is just a joy to watch, he had never played the position before but he threw his heart on to the pitch.”

The upcoming season is being billed as a big one for Liverpool’s young prospects, with the UEFA Europa League a competition that will see the likes of McConnell given chances in the senior team to impress.

And the teenager’s performance today in Singapore will give Klopp plenty to think about, with the no. 6 midfield role one of the prized in the Liverpool XI and one that the German manager needs a clear plan on.

Indeed, McConnell could be handed another chance to impress for Liverpool before the start of the season, and opportunities in Europe could now be on the table of the midfielder stays on Merseyside for the summer.
