Jermaine Jenas called out TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher live on air during Liverpool’s win over Ipswich Town on Saturday. Two goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah secured all three points for the Reds, who ensured their quality shone through in the second half.

Liverpool took a while to get going at Portman Road with the hosts arguably the better team in the opening 45 minutes. Things changed after the break, though, with Arne Slot’s side progressing through the gears to claim a deserved victory in their opening game of the season.

Salah was Liverpool’s shining light in the final third and ran Ipswich ragged as the newly-promoted Blues began to tire. Jenas pointed out Salah’s influence on proceedings in the closing stages of the match before Fletcher made a very similar comment, prompting the former to call him out.

“I think in that first half when they were struggling, Liverpool, he was the one bright spark down the right finding space,” said Fletcher. “Salah has been very bright from the start.”

Jenas, who was on co-commentary duties, was quick to point out that he had already made the same comment and accused Fletcher of not listening to him. He said: “You didn’t listen to what I said, did you? I literally said that two seconds ago.”

Fletcher quickly apologised and came up with an excuse for not hearing Jenas’ comment, replying: “The producer was speaking to me at the same time, I apologise.” Jenas then quipped: “Two things at once, Fletch! That’s the job.”

Salah was indeed Liverpool’s best performer against Ipswich and managed to set a new record with his close-range strike in the second half. It saw him become the first player in Premier League history to score a total of nine goals on the opening weekend of a league campaign.

Speaking after the final whistle on TNT Sports, Salah said: “It was quite tough today, to be fair. The weather was really warm. It’s a tough team, I’m glad we won today, I’m always happy to make a difference. When they play at home especially it’s quite tough. The crowd is always up.

“We knew that before the game. We’re experienced, so we expected a tough game. Hopefully I can keep going like this for the whole season. I always help to try to help the team all the time. I’m always happy to score goals or assist.”
