Jamie O’Hara unimpressed with £50m Chelsea player before international break

Former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara does not think Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has done anything special this season.

One caller on talkSPORT suggested that Raheem Sterling should have been called up to the England squad after the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Ukraine, but O’Hara still understands Gareth Southgate’s decision to omit the 28-year-old.

On Sterling, the former Tottenham Hotspur player said: “Chelsea in the first three games, all right, he’s done all right. He wasn’t doing anything special. He played against, who was it? Nottingham Forest, couldn’t hit a barn door.”

Chelsea have not made a great start to the new Premier League season, picking up just four points from their first four games.

However, Sterling has been one of few positives and managed to grab a brace in their only top-flight victory so far, a 3-0 win against Luton Town.

Gareth Southgate should have called up Raheem Sterling

Even if Sterling has not done anything special this season, he still could have been a very useful asset to England.

The former Manchester City star, who cost Chelsea £50m, has rarely let his country down, scoring in major tournaments for the Three Lions.

On top of that, Southgate has called up the likes of Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips, who have barely played for their clubs in the current campaign.

There is obviously no guarantee that England would have won yesterday if Sterling had been included in the squad. However, he is surely an attacking option you want available to you.

From a Chelsea perspective, at least Sterling will be fresh and ready for when Mauricio Pochettino’s side take on Bournemouth next Sunday when the Premier League resumes, a game they need to win after their surprise defeat to Nottingham Forest.
