Jamie Carragher had a humorous reaction to Gary Neville’s selection of his Premier League team of the season so far. On the Sky Sports Monday Night Football show, ahead of Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the pair had to pick the XI that had impressed them most in the 2024/25 campaign.

And Carragher was left dumbfounded by Neville opting to select Josko Gvardiol at left-back.

The Croatian international has come in for some savage criticism at Manchester City this season, most notably following his disastrous individual display in the 4-0 home defeat by Tottenham.

“How have you picked Gvardiol at left-back?” Cried the former Liverpool defender. “He gives a goal away every single game. Have you actually watched Man City?”

Neville tried to respond with “Yeah I’ve actually watched them a few times this season……” but was interrupted by “Well obviously not enough. What games have you watched? Are you serious? Serious? Oh my god.”

The United stalwart then tried to justify his choice with an explanation, but ‘Carra’ was having none of it. “We’re picking on the first half of the season and he’s given goals away so why have you picked him?” he continued. “If you’d watched him you wouldn’t have picked him.”

Carragher himself opted for Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson. Neville admitted he too considered the American international, but argued that no player unequivocally stood out in that position and Gvardiol was superior going forward.

“You weren’t happy with his seven assists then Gary?” asked Carragher, before turning to the camera. “Sky Sports, please can you put Gary Neville on more Fulham games please?”

Elsewhere, Neville had Nottingham Forest keeper Matz Sels in goal, with the rest of his back four comprising of Trent Alexander-Arnold, William Saliba and Virgil van Dijk. Ryan Gravenberch and Moises Caicedo sat in front of the back four, with Mohamed Salah, Cole Palmer, and Matheus Cunha in attack – and Chris Wood playing the No.9 role.

Carragher’s midfield and forward picks were identical, but he opted for Arsenal’s David Raya as his No.1. And aside from Van Dijk, the defence was different with Ola Aina picked at right-back, Nikola Milenkovic at centre-back and of course, Robinson instead of Gvardiol.

Carragher also named Liverpool midfielder Gravenberch as the biggest surprise package of the season so far: “When he came last year I thought he was more of a No.8 type, a floater who was a bit of nothing if I’m totally honest. But to think he’s become such a dicisplined player in front of the back four, he’s been a revelation.”
