Omar Marmoush has been unstoppable this season
A Bundesliga sensation hailed as the heir to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has already left Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany in awe. Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush has been turning heads in the German top flight this season with his extraordinary agility and clinical finishing, which are reminiscent of legendary compatriot Salah.
With Salah’s current contract with Liverpool expiring next summer, 25-year-old Marmoush is being tipped as his successor. His goal contributions this season have astonishingly surpassed even Manchester City star Erling Haaland’s, not to mention Salah himself.
Marmoush’s standout performances include scoring twice and setting up another goal in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Bayern last month, which left Kompany petrified. He also impressed with a stunning free-kick that secured a narrow 1-0 win for his team over Slavia Prague in the Champions League midweek.
Vincent Kompany was left petrified by the opposition attacker last month
And Kompany’s glowing endorsement speaks volumes about the Egypt international. Following Marmoush’s scintillating display against Bayern, Kompany said: “Marmoush is a player who’s only going to get better with time. What he did for [Hugo] Ekitike’s goal is not normal.
“To push past Upa [Dayot Upamecano] with strength, no one did that before for the whole season. And then to make the right decision at the end, the quality in his strike, and the speed. Sometimes he looks quite relaxed, then when he gets going, he’s really fast.”
Marmoush currently has 13 goals and nine assists in 15 appearances across all competitions. Only Bayern star Harry Kane has managed more goal contributions in the Bundesliga this term.
The former Wolfsburg star’s stellar form has already sparked rumours of a potential transfer to Liverpool. With Salah’s contract set to expire in seven months, Liverpool have been linked with many wide forwards.
Salah is yet to make a decision on his future
The Egyptian international is the latest attacker to be touted with a move to Anfield. Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche recently released a statement, suggesting the 2022 Europa League winners are determined to hang onto their star man.
He said: “Marmoush has matured greatly and has become the best player in the German League this season so far after his distinguished start with the Frankfurt team. Frankfurt wants Marmoush to continue during the coming period at the request of the coach. But this is not the right time to talk about this because the season is still long, and in the end it is the player’s desire – it will decide everything.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged that he does not have much say in Salah’s future, telling TNT Sports: “[His future] is not what I think about. The only thing I think about is he is so important for us. Scores important goals, works hard for the team. I’m hoping he can enjoy that feeling many, many, many more times. Especially if I’m here but also if I’m not here. I’m hoping he can do this many more times.
“He’s been incredible for Liverpool over the past eight years. He’s been incredible for us this season and I hope he can continue doing this for the rest of the season and maybe longer to come, but that’s up to him and the club to find the idea about the future.”
