Harry Kane’s trophy drought at Bayern Munich continued on Tuesday night as his team were knocked out of the German Cup last-16 by rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
The game ended with Bayern down to 10 men after Manuel Neuer received the first red card of his career for a collision with Jeremie Frimpong.
Ex-Burnley star Nathan Tella scored the winning goal in the 69th minute, much to the dismay of his former boss Vincent Kompany.
Kane was absent from the Allianz Arena due to a hamstring injury and could only watch helplessly as Bayern were defeated by Leverkusen, the same team that snatched the title from them last season.

This failure extends Kane’s career-long lack of silverware and marks the first time since 2012 that Bayern have gone a season without lifting a cup. Despite this setback, Bayern still hold a four-point lead over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, although their advantage has been reduced following a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern president Uli Hoeness remains confident of league success, having promised fans the title, making any potential stumble next summer a huge disappointment.
Hoeness confidently declared: “What I can promise is the championship title,” adding, “We are currently in a fantastic position. We sit atop the league table, and our only real competitors, Bayer and Leipzig, are trailing significantly behind us.”
The absence of Kane was felt by Bayern during their match against Leverkusen, following his injury during the draw with Dortmund. The England skipper has been in sensational form for the German titans this season, netting 20 goals in 19 appearances, following a tally of 44 in 45 games last season.
Kompany is keen to see him return to action swiftly and expressed optimism about a comeback before year-end. The winter break for Bayern commences on December 22.
“There’s a chance he’ll play again this year but he’ll definitely miss a few games,” he stated. While Kompany believes his squad can compensate for Kane’s absence, he conceded they couldn’t replicate his goal-scoring prowess.
“You cannot replace the goals or the player one-for-one – that’s why he is a top player. We have talent in the team and need to solve it differently. We have many options. Obviously, Harry has scored 20 goals but we have other players who score goals.”
