Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville blasted the team’s “s***” defending for Arsenal’s second goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium. While conducting a watch-along with his fellow pundits on The Overlap, he didn’t hold back when expressing his dismay at United’s performance in the Premier League clash.

Neville, Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher, and Ian Wright filmed themselves watching live as Ruben Amorim sought to build upon his strong start after replacing Erik ten Hag.

Despite the first half ending without goals, Arsenal took the reins post-interval. Jurrien Timber nodded home from a Declan Rice corner, setting the stage for William Saliba to score off a Thomas Partey header from yet another set-piece move.

Arsenal have boasted a robust record with dead-balls over the last two Premier League seasons, thanks to Rice’s right-footed delivery or Bukayo Saka’s left-footed prowess.

A visibly aggravated Neville lamented the lax defending for Arsenal’s second goal at the Emirates Stadium, especially following Wright’s celebration, saying: “That’s a looped corner, that.

“That’s s***, that. I’ve got some sympathy on the whipped ones. I’ve not got any sympathy on that one.

“I’ll tell you what, I’ll give some credit where credit’s due. He’s whipped everyone into the near post.

“So all the United players are in at the near post, and two of the Arsenal players are hung out at the back against Mazraoui and he’s [Partey’s] literally got a free header. You’ve played them.”

Later in the stream, Neville expressed admiration for Arsenal’s set-piece proficiency, especially when compared in this regard to their opponents.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta couldn’t hide his pleasure with his squad’s set-piece capabilities after the match, telling Match of the Day: “It was one of the best [set-piece performances].

“We could’ve scored more, and I’m very pleased with that.”

He also emphasised the importance of versatility in attack, adding: “The team has to have the capacity to score from many different situations and we could’ve scored in open play, but today we scored from set pieces.

“We have to do our best to continue to play at this level we’re playing at and continue to win matches.”
