Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag is determined to steer the club back on track after last season’s disappointing performance, reveals Tom Heaton.

Following his confirmation as United’s manager, Ten Hag has overhauled his coaching team, bringing in four new faces to avoid a repeat of last season’s dismal finish.

United’s eighth-place finish last season was their worst in Premier League history, a fact that Heaton says every player and staff member is keen to prove was an anomaly.

“We’ve put good foundations in and then it’s about stepping it on,” said Heaton. “Eighth place isn’t acceptable, we know that.

“As a club, we have our sights set high and it’s about closing the gap from where we are now, but it won’t happen overnight.

“I don’t believe immediate expectations can be met. It needs to be built up gradually. Would a change in management have helped? I don’t think so.”

“There are developments happening behind the scenes, with the new ownership, everything is coming together, and it’s starting to look much better.”

“I feel like we’ve got the foundations to kick on this season – that’s how I see it.”

Commenting on Ten Hag’s reshuffled coaching team, Heaton added: “The manager has changed a few of the coaching staff, he’s sort of realigned that, but he’s the manager, he’s in charge, he’s taking us forward.

“There’s no more thought about it from the players, because why would there be?

“The club extended his contract, we’ve got fresh staff here, there’s a slightly new direction, that’s all it is, really. The rest is down for us to deliver performances.”
