Both the Australian men’s and women’s hockey teams are competing in the FIH Pro League 2023-24.
Australia won the inaugural Men’s FIH Pro League title in 2019 and finished runners-up in the 2020-21 edition. The Kookaburras didn’t take part in the 2021-22 season due to COVID-19 but rejoined the competition last season, only to finish a disappointing seventh.
The Australian men’s hockey team began its FIH Pro League 2023-24 campaign in Bhubaneswar with a 4-3 win against Spain and will conclude their season in London on June 12 with a clash against hosts Great Britain.
Currently Australia are second in the men’s FIH Pro League 2023-24 points table with 20 points from eight games.
Meanwhile, the Australian women’s hockey team started its season with a shock 3-0 loss to the People’s Republic of China. The team will play its final match against Great Britain on June 13.
The Australian women are looking for their maiden FIH Pro League title. Their best finish was in 2020-21 when they finished second behind Belgium.
Both the Australian men’s and women’s teams will play 16 matches each throughout their respective 2023-24 FIH Pro League campaigns. The Indian cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela hosted four matches each for each team. The remaining games will be played in Antwerp, Belgium and London, England.
The men’s and women’s champions of the FIH Pro League 2023-24 will also earn a berth in their corresponding FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 tournaments, both of which will be co-hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium.
Since both hosts are automatically qualified for the World Cup, if either of the two finishes at the top of the standings, the berth will pass on to the next-best team in the table.
