Fans think Micky van de Ven 's*** himself' before leaving pitch in tears with injury

Football fans are convinced Micky van de Ven pooed himself during Tottenham’s League Cup victory against Manchester City.

The defender was part of the Spurs side that dumped Pep Guardiola’s injury-ridden City side out of the League Cup on Wednesday night.

Timo Werner opened the scoring for the home side before Pape Matar Sarr doubled Spur’s advantage midway through the first half.

The in-form Matheus Nunes halved the deficit just before the break, but City, despite their best efforts, couldn’t find an equaliser in the second period.

However, it was a moment in the first half that captured the attention of football fans on social media, after a clip of Van de Ven clutching his derriere went viral.

The close proximity of a mud stain on the Dutchman’s shorts led some to believe he’d had a mid-game accident.

Social media user @wfurnell commented: “Did Van de Ven s*** himself [poo emoji].”

@Bairdric1 replied: “The old wriggle out a pebble. Nice technique.”

@Jerod_Frank added: “Ange said to leave it all out on the pitch and Mickey said ‘Bet.’”

@azkafchri, sensing a chance to get one over on Arsenal’s rivals, said: “Facing man city and he s*** himself [x2 crying emoji] Saliba would never.”

Things weren’t quite as they seemed though, with Van de Ven instead holding the back of his leg after picking up what looked to be a hamstring injury.

The brown substance that fell out of Van de Ven’s shorts was a chunk of soil he had unfortunately collected when going to ground, but it didn’t stop supporters on social media from enjoying a joke at the Dutchman’s expense.

Moments after the now-infamous clip took place, the defender fell to the ground and required treatment from the Spurs medical team.

Van de Ven did return to his feet, but the 23-year-old hobbled off the pitch in tears after suffering yet another injury setback.

Commenting after the contest, manager Ange Postecoglou revealed: “Micky felt something in his hamstring.

“I haven’t got the full update on him but he definitely felt something and we’ll see how he is.”

Alarm bells will no doubt be ringing in north London, given Van de Ven missed a whopping 12 matches with a hamstring injury last term.

Postecoglou can ill-afford for his starting centre-half to be missing for too long either, given a run of tricky fixtures is on the horizon for Spurs.

Tottenham welcome Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon, before facing Galatasaray in Istanbul the following Thursday.

A home game against Ipswich Town follows, with Spurs returning for their first game after the November international break away to City.
