Former Liverpool and Germany star Christian Ziege has announced the tragic news that his wife Pia has passed away, following a long battle with illness.

In a very emotional post on social media, Ziege shared: “And there are always traces of your life, thoughts, pictures, moments.

“They will remind us of you, make us happy and sad and never let us forget you. Our world has stood still since November 4th. After a long and serious illness, Pia has closed her eyes forever.

“We would like to thank everyone who has walked this long and difficult path with us, as well as for the great sympathy and compassion. Pia, you will live on forever in our hearts.”

Ziege and Pia, who had been married since 1997, had two children together, Alessandro and Maria. Pia also had a daughter, Katharina, from a previous marriage.

During his football career, Ziege played for several clubs including Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Borussia Monchengladbach, before retiring in 2005. His time at Liverpool was marked by winning the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup in the 2000-2001 season.

Despite playing a role in Liverpool’s treble-winning season, the player was sold to Tottenham the following summer due to a mix of knee injuries and Jamie Carragher’s rising form.

Ziege ended up as a League Cup runner-up with Spurs in the 2001/02 season. Ziege hung up his boots in 2005 and then embarked on a career in management.
