Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has expressed his frustration after Leny Yoro was forced off the pitch with an injury during the team’s friendly loss to Arsenal, admitting that it was “very difficult” to watch the summer signing pick up an injury.

The Reds were dealt a harsh blow in their early Sunday clash against the Gunners when Rasmus Hojlund had to leave the field due to what appeared to be a hamstring problem, shortly after netting a powerful goal past the keeper.

Gabriel Jesus managed to level the score for Arsenal in the first half, a goal which Ten Hag later contested as being offside. The situation worsened for United when Yoro required treatment during a drinks break and was taken off before the interval.

Post-match, Ten Hag shared his concerns about the injuries, particularly troubled by Yoro’s setback. Speaking to MUTV, he said: “It is too short [notice] we have to wait over 24 hours and then we know hopefully more.

“We were very careful, especially with Leny. He did only 50 per cent from the sessions so it was very disappointing that he had to come off but let’s be positive and see what is coming out.”

With both players’ conditions still uncertain, it remains to be seen if they’ll be fit for United’s season opener next month. Updates on Yoro and Hojlund are expected from Ten Hag before the team’s next pre-season tour game against Real Betis on Thursday.

Some positive news for Ten Hag is that Lisandro Martinez could soon return to the pitch, though it remains to be seen whether or not he will link up with his team-mates during the Stateside tour.

United’s social media account posted a photo of the Argentine back in some form of training, having been given extended leave following his Copa America victory.

United are still looking to sign another centre-back this summer, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt linked, potentially with an eye on their current crop’s fitness.

Martinez has struggled with injuries throughout his United career, while Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have all suffered similarly or have uncertain futures at Old Trafford.
