Lee Carsley is set to name his final England squad at 2pm ahead of crucial UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland later this month. The Three Lions will reunite for the final time until March at the end of the week with the ultimate aim of earning promotion back among Europe’s elite countries.

Thomas Tuchel will be keeping a close eye on both games as he prepares to enter the hot seat as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor in January.

Carsley hasn’t looked comfortable since temporarily stepping up from his Under-21 role to cover for Southgate after his post-Euro 2024 resignation.

And, to make matters more difficult this month, the England caretaker manager is battling a looming injury crisis before two must-win outings.

Carsley could be missing at least nine senior players when he reveals his final group of players this afternoon.

That could open the door for Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United players, among others, to earn a reprieve after recent snubs.

There is also an opportunity for a handful of exciting first-time call-ups amid standout performances at the start of the Premier League season.

Dominic Solanke hoping to impress Thomas Tuchel

Dominic Solanke is looking to establish himself as a regular in the England squad after Lee Carsley handed him his first call-up in seven years last month.

The Tottenham striker ended a six-match goal drought with a brilliant brace against Aston Villa on Sunday.

And he hopes to impress Thomas Tuchel before the new England manager takes charge in January.

“Since the last camp, we had the news that the new manager will be taking over,” Solanke said.

“I’m not sure he’s going to be there, he’s going to be taking over from next year. That’s something to look forward to for the country.

“On a personal note, I’d love to be there again [in the squad]. I worked hard to get back there so it’s definitely an aim of mine to stay there.”

Lewis Hall backed for call-up

Alan Shearer has backed Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall to receive his first senior England call-up today after an encouraging start to the season.

The 20-year-old, who has earned five caps for the Under-21s, was named Player of the Match in Saturday’s win against Arsenal.

And Shearer believes he is worthy of an opportunity amid England’s continued availability woes at left-back.

“Lewis Hall is not far away from an England call-up. If he does get a call-up, he will have deserved it,” Shearer explained.

“If he doesn’t get one this time and he keeps playing the way he is, then it won’t be long. Lewis is not just knocking – he is banging on the door of the senior team.

“I watched him closely at the weekend and he had a fantastic game against Bukayo Saka, one of the best players in the Premier League and Arsenal’s danger man.

“He had a great game and hardly gave him a kick and rightfully was given player of the match.”

England have work to do

England are currently second in Group B2 in the Nations League, having won three of their four matches.

Last month’s defeat to table-toppers Greece – who have four wins from four – at Wembley has proven costly thus far.

A victory in Greece on November 14 would set up a nail-biting final matchday, with only one nation handed automatic promotion.

Lee Carsley’s outside options

Reece James, Curtis Jones and Marcus Rashford are among the England players potentially in line for a recall amid Lee Carsley’s injury woes.

Jones hasn’t yet earned his first cap, but he trained with Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024.

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall is another uncapped player in the frame as injury woes continue to strike Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell.

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers could be in line for a maiden call-up amid his starting status under Unai Emery.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has also enjoyed a strong start to the season at Nottingham Forest and will undoubtedly be in consideration.

England may have nine injury absentees

England could be without nine senior players if club managers intervene ahead of the hectic festive schedule.

Declan Rice sustained a foot injury in Arsenal’s defeat at Newcastle United and missed the Gunners’ trip to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Cole Palmer has been absent from Chelsea training after being on the receiving end of a nasty Lisandro Martinez challenge at the weekend.

At Manchester City, John Stones and Jack Grealish have been among Pep Guardiola’s many missing players in recent games.

On the other side of Manchester, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo remain sidelined.

And Crystal Palace duo Adam Wharton and Eberechi Eze have their own problems.
