Thomas Tuchel is the new England manager.
Former England international Wes Brown has poured cold water over the criticism of Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor. The FA’s decision to snub an English coach in favour of the experience and winning pedigree of Tuchel was met with just as much condemnation as excitement.
Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, and Lee Carsley were among those heavily linked to the job, but Tuchel emerged as the frontrunner after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer.
English coach Anthony Barry will assist the former Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss, but that alone hasn’t saved the FA from scrutiny after interviewing “several” candidates.
Brown, who spent 15 years of his playing career at Manchester United, earned 23 senior caps for England.
And the ex-defender has no problem with the arrival of Tuchel, feeling assured that the German has been deemed the best man for the job.
“I have no problem with [Tuchel being a foreign manager] at all,” Brown told Express Sport on behalf of Instant Casino.
“I’ve had foreign managers for England, and if [the FA] think he’s the best one for the job, then so be it.”
Brown is unsure whether any of England’s current stalwarts will particularly thrive under Tuchel compared to Southgate.
Wes Brown earned 23 England caps.
However, the 45-year-old believes that the Three Lions players will have no issues adapting to Tuchel’s new demands on the road to 2026 World Cup qualification.
He continued: “I’ve never met him, so I don’t really know [if any players in particular will benefit from Tuchel’s style of play].
“But I’m sure he’ll do what he does best, and he’ll be trying to get the best out of the players. I don’t know his style or how he manages, but I’m sure that the players will learn that very quickly.”
Carsley’s tenure as interim England manager comes to a close this month with two must-win UEFA Nations League matches.
England have travelled to Athens tonight to face League B Group 2 leaders Greece.
The visitors will know that anything less than a win to avenge last month’s 2-1 defeat at Wembley would all but end hope of automatic promotion back to the competition’s top tier.
Then, the Republic of Ireland visit Wembley on Sunday to conclude the campaign and mark the start of the Tuchel era.
He will take charge of England for the first time in March as World Cup qualifying commences.
