Cristiano Ronaldo would still be welcome to make a sensational return to Old Trafford under new boss Ruben Amorim, says former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham. Ronaldo, who was originally scouted by Sir Alex Ferguson as an 18-year-old and transformed into a world-class winger, made a dramatic homecoming in 2021.

However, after a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan just 18 months later, he left for the Saudi Pro League and Al Nassr, where he is now the face of the competition and already boasts a record-breaking Golden Boot.

Despite past tensions between the 39-year-old and United, Sheringham believes a return to Manchester isn’t out of the question. With Amorim, a former international team-mate of Ronaldo’s, set to take over later this month, a comeback can’t be ruled out.

“Cristiano Ronaldo would be very welcome back at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim,” Sheringham told FlashScore. “But, he is onto bigger and better things.

“I think that Ronaldo will follow in the path of David Beckham in doing things away from coaching, higher profile things around the world.”

Sheringham conceded that, while Ronaldo would always be welcomed back at United, it’s unlikely he’ll return in a coaching role, despite the anticipated arrival of his compatriot Amorim on November 11: “I’m sure he’d be very, very welcome in any capacity coming back to the club,” Sheringham continued. “But, I doubt that he’ll be a coach.”

Ronaldo himself echoes this sentiment, sharing on his YouTube channel, UR, that his future likely lies in his various business ventures as opposed to eyeing up any coaching badges.

“For me, it will be difficult one day to be a coach because I don’t have passion for this generation,” Ronaldo confessed. “It’s difficult, especially in football, because they don’t take advice from our experience. They think they know everything; they think the phones will give you a good education, the TikTok, the Instagram.

“I have other things to worry about, another chapter of my life that is a business part that I’m excited about. It will be a challenge for me to learn other areas I don’t know be more involved in my business, and I think I will be good.”
