Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 900th career goal during the recent international break, leading to speculation that he is poised to be celebrated with a limited-edition coin, which could become the ultimate collector’s item. The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend has broken numerous records throughout his distinguished career, and his rivalry with Lionel Messi is likely to be remembered as possibly the greatest in football history.

There’s no denying that the 39-year-old is approaching the end of his playing days, yet he is still starring for Portugal. Despite having won five Ballon d’Ors and an equal number of Champions League titles, winning Euro 2016 will undoubtedly rank among his most cherished accomplishments.

On a personal level, Ronaldo also holds the record for most international goals, with 132 in 214 appearances for his country. Ronaldo hasn’t set a date for when he might finally retire, but there have been reports that Portugal could commemorate the forward’s achievements with a special €7 coin. The hypothetical ‘CR7’ coin would be far more valuable than its face value, with expert estimates reaching as high as £113,000.

“With Cristiano Ronaldo’s status as one of the most recognisable athletes in the world, the CR7 Euro coin is expected to draw tremendous interest from both collectors and fans alike,” stated Dan Barrett of Pacific Precious Metals. “Given the coin’s gold content and Ronaldo’s worldwide following, we could see this coin selling up to $150,000 [£113k] on the collector’s market.

“The combination of a limited edition, gold content, and Ronaldo’s brand will ensure this coin’s value appreciates rapidly, especially once it hits the secondary market. Collectors will see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The proposed Ronaldo coin would not only celebrate his immense cultural impact in Portugal but also become a treasured item for his global fanbase. The Al-Nassr star has kept quiet about his hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup, but takes immense pride in having won Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League with the national team. Fresh off scoring his 900th career goal, Ronaldo is already eyeing his next achievement.

“Only me and the people around me know how difficult it is to work daily to be physically and psychologically well and reach goal 900,” Ronaldo said. “It’s a unique milestone in my career and it was with a lot of emotion I celebrated that goal.

“It represents a lot. It was the number I wanted to achieve for a long time and I knew I would achieve it because, as I continue to play, it would happen naturally. I already won two trophies for Portugal, something I really wanted. Whatever comes next is spectacular.”

Brazilian legend Pele is part of a select group to have scored 1,000 goals, though many of those came in friendlies, with tour games being prominent during his era. Ahead of scoring his landmark goal, Ronaldo admitted his aim to redefine the record books.

“Soon I will do 900 and after that it will be 1,000,” Ronaldo told his former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand. “If I don’t have injuries, that is most important, I want that. My challenge is to reach 1,000 goals, with one difference all the goals that I score will have video. So I can prove that.”
