Angelo Gabriel never played a professional game for Chelsea – but still made them a profti
Chelsea have made a £6million profit on Angelo Gabriel this summer, despite the winger never making one competitive appearance for the Blues. The 19-year-old star was bought by the Premier League side for £13million from Brazilian club Santos in July last year, and he was then loaned out to Strasbourg in France over the 2023/24 season.
The French club was bought over by Chelsea’s owners in 2023, and Angelo went on to make 24 appearances in all competitions for the club – without notching a single goal. The Brazilian winger has now secured a transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in a deal worth around £19m, according to TransferMarkt.
Angelo will join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in Saudi Arabia this season thanks to his transfer from Chelsea – with the London club making a hefty profit of £6m on the player they never handed a Premier League debut to.
Chelsea were once again a busy club during this summer’s transfer window, with several incomings and outgoings at Stamford Bridge. The Blues sold the following players for a combined profit of £192m: Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallager, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Angelo Gabriel and Diego Moreira.
Enzo Maresca then added the likes of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders, Aaron Anselmino, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley and Marc Guiu for a combined price of £201m.
The London club also loaned out several players, as Maresca aimed to cut down on his already bloated squad. Raheem Sterling headed across the city to Arsenal for the season, with Trevoh Chalobah being loaned out to Crystal Palace and goalkeeper Kepa heading to Bournemouth for the new campaign.
Maresca has an expensive squad – and pretty high expectations
Despite all of these pricey transfers over the summer, Chelsea have only won one Premier League game since the start of the season – losing to Manchester City and most recently drawing at home to Crystal Palace. While this average start might begin to worry some fans, Maresca is convinced he has this all under control – and that not winning every game is “normal”.
Speaking after the Palace game, the 44-year-old said: “We completely deserved to win the game with the amount of chances we had. Overall the performance was good. The direction is the correct one.
“Probably one thing that has to be clear, Chelsea three years ago won the Champions League, but now it is not that kind of Chelsea so now sometimes if you don’t win it is normal.”
