Chelsea team news: Predicted XI vs Newcastle as James and Fernandez decision made

Enzo Maresca was forced to shake up his defensive ranks last weekend against Liverpool, but the Chelsea boss may now have the opportunity to field his strongest back-four for the first time this season when his side face Newcastle.

The Blues were without Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella for their side’s 2-1 defeat at Anfield, but Maresca will be hoping that the returning duo can help his side bounce back to winning form against the Magpies, who also head into the clash on the back of a loss.

Chelsea’s Predicted XI vs Newcastle (4-3-3)

Goalkeeper: Sanchez

Robert Sanchez came under fire for his performance against Liverpool last weekend, particularly the Reds’ second goal at Anfield, but Maresca has continued to reiterate that he is pleased with how the Spaniard is performing. He said: “I’m very happy with Robert, he’s doing fantastic with us. Not only in building from the back but also making saves.” With Filip Jorgensen playing in midweek, Sanchez is expected to get the nod on Sunday.

Defence: James, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella

Tosin Adarabioyo replaced the suspended Fofana against Liverpool, and the ex-Fulham star looks likely to be relegated to the bench over the weekend. Levi Colwill struggled without his usual centre-back partner, and Maresca will be keen to reunite the pair as soon as possible.

Captain Reece James was a surprise inclusion at Anfield as well and, after not being named in the matchday squad against Panathinaikos, he looks likely to remain in right-back. The return of Cucurella will therefore see Malo Gusto forced to warm the bench.

Midfield: Lavia, Caicedo, Palmer

Moises Caicedo continues to shine for Chelsea, and he emerged with an abundance of credit over the weekend when partnered with Romeo Lavia. The pair provided a strong foundation for Cole Palmer to attempt to build attacks from, and Maresca’s decision to start Enzo Fernandez in Greece may indicate that he will be keeping the faith in last weekend’s midfield trio.

Attack: Madueke, Jackson, Sancho

Nicolas Jackson has asserted himself as one of the first names on the team sheet at Chelsea so far this season, with his goal against Liverpool highlighting that his finishing is improving as well. Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho enjoyed strong starts to the campaign and will need to showcase that they can bounce back from a quiet game when they travel to St James’ Park this weekend. The duo will come up against two ex-Blues academy graduates, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, who will both have a point to prove against their former side.
