Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit to find a new No.1 goalkeeper after submitting a £17million offer for Villarreal stopper Filip Jorgensen, according to reports.

New head coach Enzo Maresca is keen to bolster their options at the back after a disastrous defensive performance last season and Jorgensen – a long-time target for the Blues – is at the top of his list.

The west London club reportedly made contact with the player’s representatives earlier this week to gauge his interest on a move to London.

They have now followed up on their interest by sending a bid to his club, with Villarreal now considering the offer from the two-time Champions League winners.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have offered £16.8m (€20m) for the Denmark Under-21 international, who is rated as one of the most promising emerging goalkeepers in Europe.

Jorgensen is said to be ‘keen’ on the idea of moving to Stamford Bridge and the 22-year-old could get his wish as the two clubs negotiate his potential move to the Premier League.

However, Villarreal will not be under pressure to sell the 22-year-old as he only signed a new contract in June to keep him in Spain until 2029 and his release clause stands at £28.9m.

Maresca is keen to bring in a new man between the sticks with concerns over Djordje Petrovic’s distribution, while Robert Sanchez is not viewed as a viable option to take Chelsea into the new season.

Chelsea currently have six goalkeepers on their books, with Sanchez and Petrovic joined by Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom in the first-team squad.

Maresca also has American talent Gabriel Slonina and Eddie Beach available to call upon, and it seems likely that at least two of the aforementioned players will be making way if Jorgensen arrives.

The club have been trying to offload Kepa Arrizabalaga, who only has 11 months left on his contract, and rejected a bid from Al-Ittihad earlier in July.

The Spaniard, 29, is keen to secure a permanent move to Real Madrid and is currently waiting to see if the La Liga champions make a move for him.
