Romeo Lavia missed the Chelsea win at Wolves.
Romeo Lavia has posted a cryptic message on social media after being left out of the Chelsea squad that played Wolves on Sunday. The Blues prevailed 6-2 at Molineux in a chaotic affair, but only after the pre-match talk had been dominated by the absence of the Belgian midfielder.
Lavia started the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City last weekend, being being withdrawn after 66 minutes.
He was also a late substitute in the Europa Conference League win over Servette on Thursday, and his omission by Enzo Maresca was initially viewed by Chelsea fans as being dropped.
However, the 20-year-old showed no signs of discontent when he posted on X after the win. But his wording still left many supporters guessing after he didn’t exactly disclose what had gone on.
“Five star team performance!” He wrote. “Let’s keep it going. PS: I’ll be back very soon. Nothing to worry about it’s going to be a long and exciting season for us Blues.”
He rounded up his statement with a blue heart emoji, suggesting he was very much on board with the Chelsea squad. And his post appeared to back-up reports that Maresca had left him out due to a minor hamstring issue.
Lavia has made just two Premier League appearances since signing for Chelsea last summer.
Since signing from Southampton for a £53million fee last summer, Lavia’s time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injury. He made just one substitute appearance for the club in the 2023/24 campaign, after two lengthy lay-offs for ankle and thigh injuries.
But having signed been handed a seven-year contract that runs until 2030, Lavia is viewed as a long term prospect by the London club. And prior to today’s selection, he appeared central to Maresca’s plans.
Without him, the Italian oversaw his first Premier League win on what was frenzied afternoon. Chelsea took the lead after 98 seconds when Nicolas Jackson headed in, before Matheus Cunha to level matters.

Cole Palmer then restored Chelsea’s lead with a cushioned lob from 30 yards only for Jorgen Strand Larsen to immediately stab in to make it 2-2 at the break. But the visitors then ran riot after the break, with Palmer providing three assists for Noni Madueke to complete a hat-trick.
Joao Felix then rounded off proceedings with a side-footed finish from 12 yards to make it 6-2. It was the Portuguese forward’s first appearance since arriving on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid.
