Trevoh Chalobah has reacted to being left out of Chelsea’s pre-season squad.
Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly ‘really sad and disappointed’ with his current situation at the club, having been left out of the travelling squad for the Blues’ pre-season USA tour.
He is set to leave Stamford Bridge after a brutal snub by new boss Enzo Maresca, who has a glut of options at centre-back, despite Chalobah impressing in the second half of the season under Mauricio Pochettino.
Maresca did not want to take a bloated squad to the States for matches against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City and Real Madrid, with Chalobah one of several to miss out on the cut.
Centre-backs Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Tosin Adarabioyo have all been picked ahead of Chalobah, which seemingly ends his Stamford Bridge career after joining the club as an eight-year-old.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chalobah has been left ‘really sad and disappointed’ at being left out of the travelling contingent. He felt that he performed to his best last season when fit and had been excited to prove his worth to Maresca. But instead was told to stay at home, with the club happy with their current options in his position.
He made 13 appearances towards the tail end of the campaign after overcoming a thigh injury, helping the Blues close out the season with five Premier League wins in a row. Alfie Gilchrist, Djordje Petrovic, Cesare Casadei, Bashir Humphreys, David Datro Fofana, Deivid Washington and Omari Kellyman all also miss out through a mixture of injuries and impending exits.
A rejuvinated Trevoh Chalobah helped Chelsea to five wins in a row to end last season.
Chalobah’s omission has opened the door to a summer move, with CaughtOffside claiming that Crystal Palace, West Ham and Fulham are all said to be keen on opening talks with Chelsea over their surplus-to-requirements defender.
Palace are set to open the bidding at £20m, wary that they may soon need to replace the sought-after Marc Guehi following his stellar Euro 2024 performances, but Chelsea do not currently want to sell below the £25m mark.
Chalobah has a contract until 2028, having penned a new deal in November 2022, but persistent injuries have hampered his ability to nail down a place in the starting lineup.
The 25-year-old made his Blues debut in 2021 after successful loans at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient, making 80 appearances in three years for Chelsea before it was determined that he would not be required for the coming season.
Disasi, Badiashile and Fofana cost a combined £143.5m and supplemented by academy product Colwill and this summer’s free signing of Adarabioyo, will lead Chelsea’s contingent of defensive reinforcements without Chalobah.
