The Jadon Sancho transfer saga has taken an unexpected twist with reports that Chelsea are set to make a shock bid for the Manchester United winger. After talks with PSG seemingly broke down, the Blues have emerged as contenders to sign the 24-year-old.

According to reports in Germany, United’s Premier League rivals are prepared to not only offer a transfer fee, but also two academy players as part of a swap deal.

Express Sport has looked at four of the main candidates who could make way for Sancho to arrive at Stamford Bridge.

Conor Gallagher

A week ago, the prospect of Conor Gallagher heading anywhere but Atletico Madrid seemed inconceivable. The midfielder travelled to Spain and agreed personal terms with the La Liga club but the deal was scuppered over Chelsea’s failure to secure a move for Samu Omorodion in the other direction.

With Erik ten Hag seemingly intent on bringing in another midfielder though, the prospect of Gallagher coming to Old Trafford would be a no brainer to him. The involvement of Sancho would also negate a portion of the fee the west London club require.

New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has made it clear Gallagher is not part of his plans, while despite being reintegrated back into the first team fold, Sancho is unlikely to play a prominent role at Old Trafford. A swap deal could not only ease Chelsea’s fears over profit and sustainability rules, but revitalise both players.

Sky has slashed the price of its Sky Sports, Sky Stream, Sky TV and Netflix bundle in an unbeatable new deal that saves £216 and includes 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

With Ultra HD included at no extra cost, football fans can enjoy the 2024/25 season with crystal clear picture quality.

Trevoh Chalobah

Like with Gallagher, the future of Trevoh Chalobah appears to be away from Stamford Bridge after coming through the club’s academy ranks. The centre-back made just 15 club appearances last season, and has been linked with the likes of Aston Villa and Fulham.

Despite their double swoop from Bayern Munich this week, United are in the midst of another defensive crisis with Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, and Leny Yoro all injured. As a result, a 36-year-old Jonny Evans is set to feature prominently in the early part of the season, but Ten Hag would surely view Chalobah, 25, as a more squad player.

Armando Broja

After three loan spells away, the reality will be dawning on Armando Broja that a regular place in the Chelsea starting XI is a considerable distance away. And at 22, the striker seemingly needs to end his 15-year association with the club if he is to get his professional club career up and running.

Amid the hamstring injury to Rasmus Hojlund, and the preference of both Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee to play in a wider role, Broja would be an alternative ‘No.9’ option for Erik ten Hag. And let’s face it, the Albanian international can surely do no worse than Wout Weghorst.

Mykhailo Mudryk

Obviously using Mudryk as part of a swap deal would not signify releasing an academy product, but surely the Ukrainian’s Chelsea nightmare can’t be allowed to stumble into a third season. Few doubt the 23-year-old has ability, but even fewer perceive him to be in the right place to showcase it.

Forget the ridiculous contract, a change of environment for the winger should suit all parties. It would represent a gamble from United, but one which could reap gold if he shows the form that once made him so hotly pursued by Arsenal before the Blues swooped.
