The Carabao Cup offers up the first opportunity to bank major silverware in 2024/25, and all remaining teams in the competition will be eager to bolster their trophy cabinets.

Newcastle United, who beat Brentford last night, will be particularly keen to discover their route to a Wembley final in March, having failed to pick up a major trophy since 1955. Liverpool and Arsenal also booked their spots in the last four with narrow wins over Southampton and Crystal Palace respectively.

In tonight’s only game, Tottenham ended up on the right side of a seven-goal thriller in north London, beating Manchester United 4-3 in front of their own fans.

Here come the balls…

The Carabao Cup semi-final draw is up next, and with only four balls to choose from, it won’t be a long one.

Don’t go anywhere.

Carabao Cup draw delayed

The scheduled 10:30pm start time for Carabao Cup semi-final balls to be drawn is no longer, with Sky Sports’ coverage of Tottenham’s win over Manchester United running slightly over.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou just delivered a priceless interview which pundits Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher are still picking apart.

But the draw won’t be long now.

Tottenham and Newcastle aiming to end lengthy droughts

Liverpool do not need to cast their minds too far back to remember winning a major trophy, having got their hands on last season’s Carabao Cup earlier this year.

For the remaining three teams, the stakes are somewhat higher.

Arsenal are four years without significant silverware, Tottenham are on a 16-year cold streak and Newcastle have gone a staggering 69 years without.

Arsenal slight favourites for cup glory

Despite Liverpool’s Carabao Cup pedigree, bookmakers have marked Arsenal down as the narrow favourites for the trophy.

The odds from oddschecker are as follows…

Arsenal: 2/1

Liverpool: 9/4

Newcastle: 5/1

Tottenham 7/1

Carabao Cup past winners

Of the four teams remaining, Liverpool have the clear advantage in terms of Carabao Cup history.

They have won it three times since either one of Tottenham, Arsenal or Newcastle got their hands on the trophy, and their 10 overall triumphs is more than any other team in the competition’s history.

Spurs last won it in 2008, with Arsenal sealing their second of only two victories way back in 1993.

Newcastle have never won the Carabao Cup.

Who is involved in the draw? Where can I watch it?

The semi-final draw will be broadcast on Sky Sports, with Mark Chapman leading the presenting duties.

‘Chappers’ is set to be joined by Liverpool legends Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher.

When is the semi-final draw?

The Carabao Cup semi-final draw itself is scheduled to take place at about 10:30pm (GMT) this evening, giving everyone around half an hour to catch their breath after Manchester United and Tottenham’s epic quarter-final tussle.

Tottenham through to Carabao Cup semi-finals

Tottenham never fail to entertain, do they? Ange Postecoglou’s side are through to the semis after beating Manchester United 4-3.

At one point they were 3-0 up against United, who pulled it back to 3-2 in the space of seven second-half minutes.

Spurs restored their two-goal lead through Son Heung-min before Jonny Evans bagged what turned out to be a consolation in stoppage time.

With the dust still settling, the bottom line is Tottenham are in the hat and United are not.

When will the semi-finals be played?

The Carabao Cup semi-finalists are set for a pair of high-stakes clashes at their own ground and that of their opponents.

The first legs will take place in the week commencing January 6, and the second legs are scheduled for the week commencing February 3.

The final is pencilled in for March 16 at Wembley.

Carabao Cup quarter-final scores

There were three matches last night, with Newcastle, Liverpool and Arsenal all fighting their way through.

But none of those three teams had it all their own way.

Here is how the games panned out…

Arsenal 3-2 Crystal Palace

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Newcastle 3-1 Brentford

Tottenham 3-0 Manchester United*

Tottenham surge ahead

The only remaining Carabao Cup quarter-final fixture is being played out this evening, with Tottenham hosting Manchester United.

Currently it’s the north Londoners with one foot in the semis after Dominic Solanke’s 15th-minute opener and Dejan Kulusevski’s effort moments into the second half.

Lagging two goals behind, there is work to do for United in the second half if Ruben Amorim is to stand a chance of opening his Red Devils silverware account in March.
