Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United exceeded expectations this season

Bruno Fernandes believes Manchester United exceeded the expectations set by outsiders at the beginning of the campaign.

Up until last month, the Red Devils had been competing on all four fronts throughout the season, but a dismal display in Seville saw their dreams of European success end bleakly.

However, at that point, United already had one piece of silverware under their belts – the Carabao Cup. A six-year trophy drought came to a close in February when the Reds tasted success at Wembley Stadium after a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

June 3rd also holds another trip to Wembley to take on rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final, a match that has fans from both sides feeling nauseous at the thought of tasting defeat.

In the Premier League, matters became a two-horse race earlier in the calendar year, with fatigue, injuries and substandard showings causing the Reds to take their foot off the gas and oversee several lacklustre results that subjected them to a top-four race, rather than a title one.

Fernandes expects Reds to build on this season

As the 2022/2023 term draws to a close, Fernandes has reflected on a mostly positive season to kickstart Erik ten Hag’s tenure and set his sights on further successes under the Dutchman.

We have such a great team that have been doing such a great job this season and no one thought that United could be fighting for the top four. We know that now everyone is thinking that United’s been great, but I remember at the beginning of the season, no one put our team in the top six.

“So I think it’s a good surprise for them, for us, not. Because we knew that we could be there, we knew that we could be even higher in the league but we had our moments, and that’s why we are still in the position of fighting for top four and not bigger things. But I think soon, this club, these players and this team will be fighting for much bigger things.”
