Bruno Fernandes was sent off against Tottenham
It’s mind-blowing that Bruno Fernandes is not banned for Manchester United.
You can’t have four officials inside the ground and two in a VAR room view an incident twice just for the decision to be overruled a couple of days later. How can six officials all get it completely wrong?
It’s becoming an absolute farce and if anything, it just goes to show that VAR is not fit for purpose.
The FA panel that dismissed Fernandes’ sending-off contained three former pros.
It may be time we put some ex-Premier League players in the VAR room to offer their expertise if we’re going to rely on them for the end decision anyway.
Not all calls are black and white, some are put down to the subjective view of the referee.
When Michael Oliver showed Leandro Trossard a red card for kicking the ball away against Manchester City, that decision was assessed by a five-strong Premier League panel.
On that occasion, two people in the room felt Oliver was wrong. Fortunately for him, the other three thought he was right.
But it just goes to show that everybody cannot agree on every decision and this is a major flaw with VAR that will never be fixed.
They’re striving for perfection, which is impossible – but refereeing an incident three times makes the whole process illogical.
Birmingham make rod for own back
BIRMINGHAM City could learn a thing or two about humility from their arch-rivals Aston Villa.
While Unai Emery was masterminding a win over Bayern Munich, Birmingham captain Krystian Bielik declared his team are “too good for League One” and “will be promoted by March”.
That’ll be pinned up in every opponent’s dressing room this season.
