Estevao Willian’s agent has opened up on why they chose to join Chelsea and that the club see him playing as a number ten.
Chelsea completed a deal for the 17-year-old earlier this summer, for a fee which could rise to £51.7m and he will join the club after the Club World Cup in 2025.
The Blues have really honed in on the South American market following the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022.
Chelsea see Estevao as a number ten
The teenager becomes Chelsea’s fifth signing from the continent after Andrey Santos, Kendry Paez, Angelo Gabriel and Deivid Washington.
Estevao is viewed as one of if not the biggest talent in South America, so it’s seen as something of a coup that the Blues have completed the signing, having previously missed out on his team-mate Endrick to Real Madrid.
There are high hopes for Estevao, who has been described as the best Brazilian born player since Neymar, and his agent Andre Cury has been speaking on why they chose to join Chelsea.
“The whole project was worked out with the player’s father, who is a former athlete,” he told Brazilian outlet UOL.
“Chelsea’s project is to have a new, young team with organisation and investment. They also see Estevao playing as a number 10.
“They see Estevao in that role. It’s an important thing.”
Cury also went on to add that he believes Estevao is better than Brazil legend Neymar was at the same age.
“He has quality, talent, speed, change of direction, intelligence,” he added.
“In fact, if you compare Neymar at his age, Estevao is above what Neymar was.
“At 17, Estevao plays better than Neymar did at 17. Whether he will reach Neymar’s peak, we will only know with time.”
Only time will tell how good Estevao will become but he clearly has all the tools to become one of the best, and it will be interesting see what Chelsea’s plans are for his development and how they plan to integrate him into the first team.
