Bellingham equals Ronaldo’s Real Madrid record with strike against Girona

Jude Bellingham scored yet again for Real Madrid as he equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s 14-year-old record.

The 20-year-old scored Los Blancos’ third in their 3-0 victory over Girona on Saturday night to help his side remain top of LaLiga.

He also produced a breathtaking assist for Joselu as he channelled his inner-Luka Modric to find the striker with a glorious outside of the foot pass.

And he then got the goal his performance deserved in the 71st minute, with the midfielder volleying home from inside the box into the bottom left corner.

It was his seventh strike in all competitions for Real since making the move to the Bernabeu from Borussia Dortmund in a deal rising to £115million.

His goal was also his sixth in LaLiga in just his seventh outing – matching Ronaldo’s record from his debut 2009/10 season.

No other Real player in the 21st century in their opening campaign has managed to find the back of the net six times other than Ronaldo.

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored just four goals in his first seven appearances, with Brazilian legend Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema each scoring three.

Though Bellingham isn’t Real’s joint top scorer from seven games, with Benzema banging in eight goals in the 2021/22 season.

However Ronaldo, who also struck eight times in the 2011/12 term, fired in a whopping 15 goals in the 2014/15 campaign.

Speaking after the win over Girona, Bellingham insisted Real’s victory was a statement to their LaLiga rivals.

He said: “It was an important win. We made a statement of intent to La Liga – three goals and a clean sheet against a team that was doing very well.”

Commenting on his assist for Joselu, the England international claimed he drew inspiration from Croatian icon Modric.

Bellingham remarked: “I’ve been watching Modric every day for three months.

“I just want to be creative. It was a good goal because it took the pressure off us that they put on us at the start.”
