Bayern Munich are reportedly eyeing up Erik ten Hag to succeed Thomas Tuchel as manager this summer despite the Dutchman overseeing a record 13th Premier League defeat of the season on Monday night. United were humiliated by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park as they suffered a 4-0 loss.

Bayern have struggled for form this season and announced in February that Tuchel would be departing the club at the end of the campaign. The club have failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012, although they have qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Former Red Devils manager Ralf Rangnick turned down an approach from Bayern in favour of continuing as Austria boss. And Ten Hag’s management team have also reportedly held talks with the German giants about the prospect of taking over at the Allianz Arena in the event he is sacked by United.

According to German outlet Kicker, Ten Hag is the new concrete target for Bayern. The 54-year-old led United to Carabao Cup success during his maiden campaign in England and also helped them secure a return to the Champions League. But his team have been woeful at times this season and the former Ajax boss has been tipped to lose his job in the coming weeks.

It has been suggested that Ten Hag and Tuchel could even swap places, with new United minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly engaging in talks with the German recently.

United had never lost more than 12 matches in a single Premier League campaign before Monday night, but were on the receiving end of a hiding in the capital as Michael Olise raced through to open the scoring early on before Jean-Philippe Mateta added a second before the interval. Tyrick Mitchell and Olise added further strikes in the second half to leave United eighth in the table.

Ten Hag came in for fierce criticism after the match but refused to throw in the towel at Old Trafford. “Absolutely,” he told Sky Sports after being asked if he was the right man to lead the club. “If the right players are available, we have a good squad. We miss almost the whole backline and then we have problems.

“I will keep fighting. I prepared the team in the best way I could do. It was not good enough, I have to take responsibility for that but I will find energy and prepare them for Sunday’s game.”
