Bayern Munich chief Max Eberl has affirmed the club’s faith in Vincent Kompany, despite their thrashing by Barcelona.

The Bundesliga giants, who usually have an exemplary reord in the group stages of the Champions League, were taught a lesson by Basrcelona, now under the guidance of their ex-manager Hansi Flick, in their 4-1 defeat.

This marked Kompany’s second defeat in three European matches as manager, leaving Bayern with some catching up to do in the competition. The Belgian’s appointment was met with mixed reactions from supporters, who were upset over Thomas Tuchel’s exit.

However, Bayern’s leadership maintain their support for the current course and have no plans to alter it after one chastening loss. Kompany’s side currently lead the Bundesliga and their director of sport stated: “We believe in what we’re doing and we will continue to defend what we’re doing.”

Raphinha wasted no time in scoring the opening goal on his way to a hat-trick. Harry Kane managed to equalise for the visitors before Barcelona ran riot afrer Robert Lewandowski put the hosts back ahead.

The result led to claims that Kompany’s team were too open defensively – a view that the Belgian himself dismissed. He highlighted that his team had been lauded for their solid defence up until now, only for it to fall apart in Spain.

He said: “I think both teams did that today. If we look back to the press conference yesterday, the talk was about the fact we’re the team that conceded the fewest chances in Europe. We didn’t do everything right today, otherwise we wouldn’t lose 4-1. We must learn from this game and see what we can do better. That’s what will happen.”

With only three points picked up from nine possible, Bayern are currently languishing precariously in 23rd place, just inside the play-off spots.

Bayern’s other defeat occured at the hands of Aston Villa. However, they humiliated Dinamo Zagreb by hitting nine past them in their other match.

Next they face two pivotal matches on their own turf. Up first is Benfica followed by a highly-anticipated showdown with PSG.
