Barcelona linked to former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong

Jeremie Frimpong is certainly making a name for himself since leaving Celtic for Bayer Leverkusen to take on the Bundesliga in 2021.

The young Dutchman arrived at Celtic as a fresh-faced 18-year-old and quickly displayed a raw attacking talent and enthusiasm that endeared him to the Celtic support.

But now, after two seasons at Leverkusen, intense speculation has surrounded the former Celtic defender’s future. Real Madrid and Manchester United have both been linked with summer moves and now, it seems, that Barcelona could also be in the frame to make their play.

Spanish reporter Alfredo Martinez tweeted, “Meeting today of Jordi Alba’s agents with Barcelona (Alemany and Cruyff), not only to discuss Alba’s future and his departure. The agents insist that he wants to fulfil his contract and they have also talked about other players they are bringing. They have been summoned to future meetings.

“One of the names that has also been discussed at the meeting and controlled by the same agents is that of right-back Jeremy Frimpong, the 22-year-old Dutch full-back from Bayer Leverkusen.”

Frimpong is closing in on his 100th appearance with the Bundesliga giants. In his 90 appearances so far for Leverkusen, he has scored 11 goals and created 19 assists. So it is little wonder that clubs like Barcelona are taking interest.

It is widely known that Celtic will be due a cut of any transfer fee involved should Frimpong move on this summer and that would be a welcome bonus as Ange Postecoglou will no doubt look to strengthen in the coming transfer window.

It does seem that when the time comes, Frimpong could have the pick of Europe’s top clubs this summer.
