Barcelona director close to leaving the club – Gerard Romero

Barcelona’s plans for the upcoming summer transfer window were hampered by the sudden announcement of Mateu Alemany’s exit.

The Barcelona sporting director has decided to quit the club on June 30, 2023, in order to embark on a new project at Aston Villa, alongside Unai Emery. His impending departure has left Barça in a spot of bother, especially knowing how important he was on the club’s executive team.

But various reports suggest Alemany is not the only senior-level executive to depart Barcelona in the coming summer. The club’s other director Jordi Cruyff is also expected to leave the club after falling out of favour with others in the executive team.

Gerard Romero has offered an update on the situation. As per the Spanish journalist, it appears Cruyff is seemingly favouring an exit from Camp Nou and his future will most likely reside outside Barça.

Cruyff’s potential exit from Barcelona could come in the backdrop of several incidents that affected his relationship with other executives and prominent members of the club, including coach Xavi Hernandez.

One such incident saw the Barcelona coach disregard Cruyff’s desire to sign former Barcelona starlet Xavi Simons. It was another turning point behind the relationship of Cruyff and the rest of the Barça board.

Similar incidents happened with Alemany, who was not happy with the way Joan Laporta was asking for Jorge Mendes and Pini Zahavi for advice, even though they served their own interests. He was also unhappy with the lack of secrecy over the board’s activities.

The exit of Alemany and Cruyff in the same summer could prove to be bad omen for Barcelona, especially ahead of a crucial summer where the club must prove to be swift if they are to navigate through the tricky Financial Fair Play laws by La Liga.
