Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz has labelled Kylian Mbappe a ‘normal striker’ after the Frenchman’s horrifying miss on Monday night.

Without a goal at the European Championship, Mbappe looked as if he was to end his drought in the competition midway through the second half.

Bursting in behind the Austrian defence, the recent Real Madrid signing only had goalkeeper Pentz to beat, but Mbappe fluffed his lines in embarrassing fashion.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss, Pentz said: “He is a completely normal striker like any other. He is just faster.”

Mbappe did play a major role in securing France’s victory, having provided the cross that led to Maximilian Wober’s own goal.

But it proved to be an evening to forget for the forward, who was substituted late on after suffering a broken nose.

The 2018 World Cup winner was involved in a bloody collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso, before being ushered off the pitch and taken to hospital.

His injury was confirmed by the French Football Federation on Tuesday morning, with a statement reading: “Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team. Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Dusseldorf.”

Pentz was afforded a front-row seat for the incident, with the goalkeeper the first to alert the officials about Mbappe’s condition.

However, the 27-year-old wasn’t pleased with how Mbappe and the French backroom staff dealt with the situation.

He added: “I just saw that his face was covered in blood. You don’t know if it’s a cut or something worse.

“After I saw the blood, I behaved fairly, not like him.”

Despite having been taken off by the physios, Mbappe re-entered the pitch so the game could be stopped, as referee Jesus Gil Manzano didn’t allow 10-man France to make a substitution.

Mbappe received a yellow card for his troubles, with Pentz unhappy about the superstar’s behaviour: “This is crazy. You don’t really want to see situations like this in a tournament like this.”

Reports from France have suggested Mbappe could be forced to sit out the rest of the group stage, with a return expected in the knockouts, should Les Bleus make it that far.

It’s claimed after a medical examination the need for surgery was ruled out, but Mbappe is still expected to undergo a period of time on the sideline.

Upon his return, it’s mooted the 25-year-old might have to play with a protective mask – something he joked about on social media.

Posting to his 14million followers on X, Mbappe said: “Any ideas for masks?”

France take on the Netherlands in Leipzig on Friday, before rounding off their Group D fixtures with a clash against Poland in Dortmund next Tuesday.
