David Raya went down in the second half of Arsenal’s draw at Man City
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya should have been booked for simulation against Manchester City, new footage has shown. The Spaniard went down during a second-half at the Etihad Stadium in which Gunners players were criticised for their time-wasting tactics.
Raya was preparing to take a goal-kick when a video from high up in the stands, obtained by multiple media outlets, shows a member of Arsenal’s coaching team start gesturing for him to go down.
Substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly then raced down the touchline to communicate with Raya, who eventually slumped to the turf and told referee Michael Oliver that he was in need of medical treatment.
The incident came during City’s second-half onslaught on the Arsenal penalty area, when the reigning Premier League champions were 2-1 down and playing against 10 men following Leandro Trossard’s red card.
And Raya going down allowed Arsenal a vital break in play, with manager Mikel Arteta calling most of his players over to the touchline and delivering instructions while the clock ticked down. Oliver booked Lewis-Skelly for unsporting behaviour for his role in the fiasco.
But given he did not have all the information relating to the incident, including what was said to Raya and the Arsenal coach’s instruction to go down, Oliver was unable to book the goalkeeper for feigning injury.
Michael Oliver officiated a fiery clash between Man City and Arsenal on Sunday
Multiple other Gunners stars went down with cramp or injury during the latter stages of Sunday’s titanic battle in Manchester. But City eventually rescued a point in the 98th minute, when substitute John Stones finally breached the visitors’ impenetrable defensive wall to make it 2-2.
Despite Arsenal embracing the dark arts to keep City out for so long, Guardiola did not appear bitter after the final whistle, upon which he shook the hand of former assistant Arteta with a smile on his face.
“They put players in line and showed incredible commitment,” the City boss told the BBC. “I think we are not able to do that as a team. Big compliments to Arsenal because they defended every single ball until the end. We created chances, not clear ones because they have [Riccardo] Calafiori, [William] Saliba, Gabriel, [Thomas] Partey, [Declan] Rice.
“It was so difficult. The second balls did not fall because they wanted to stop the game and stop the game. We know how much they stopped the game in the second half. In the end we got what we tried to do.”
