Arsenal have a plan in motion and should it come to fruition, Mikel Arteta will have his very own version of Erling Haaland to work with next season. Benjamin Sesko made the same jump as Manchester City’s goal-machine from Red Bull Salzburg to the Bundesliga and is tipped to follow in Haaland’s footsteps once again, stepping up to the Premier League.

The Daily Mirror claim that Arsenal are in pole position to sign the £55million-rated striker this summer, who would prefer a move to north London over interest from their English rivals and Saudi Arabian teams.

The 21-year-old scored 14 goals in his debut Bundesliga season and stands at a towering 6’5”. Comparisons have been drawn with Haaland, with the pair going through similar journeys in their careers, and now Sesko may end up in north London to provide competition for the Norwegian striker.

Kai Havertz led the line for Arsenal in the second half of the season and his aerial prowess was lauded, but Arteta ruthlessly bemoaned the lack of a natural goalscorer to lead the line following their Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Sporting director Edu appears to have heard Arteta’s request loud and clear, with the summer transfer window yet to open and already Arsenal are edging closer to signing Sesko, who has often been dubbed the ‘next Haaland’.

Comparisons had even been made by the Slovenian’s own Leipzig team-mates, as he boldly proclaimed that he plans not only to match Haaland’s goalscoring exploits, but exceed them.

“Such comparisons motivate me and give me energy,” he told the Bundesliga. “They do not represent pressure. I will listen and learn so I can be even better than he is. My teammates at the club tell me that Haaland and I are very similar, especially in terms of speed. Most of them even tell me that I’m better than him!”

Expectations will be tempered if the youngster makes a big-money move to the Emirates, as he can expect to share playing time with Havertz and also potentially Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah should they remain at the club.

Arteta will get the chance to bed Sesko in slowly and introduce him bit-by-bit to English football, a contrast to how Haaland exploded on his Premier League debut with two goals against West Ham.

But Sesko could prove to be just as pivotal going forward as Arteta plans to build a team that can not only challenge City for the title, but eclipse them, having gone desperately close in each of the past two years. Sesko could be just the striker to get them over the line.
