Gabby Agbonhalor has warned Newcastle to expect showdown talks with Anthony Gordon with rumours of a potential move to Liverpool refusing to die down. The Reds have been linked with Gordon over the last few months, with reports of their interest coming to light during the Euros.

It was reported last month that Gordon was open to joining Liverpool, while it was even rumoured that he had spoken about the potential switch with his England team-mates. However, it remains to be seen whether a move is still under consideration with Newcastle no longer needing to raise money by selling important players.

Agbonlahor believes Gordon should take matters into his own hands by holding showdown talks with the Magpies in an effort to force through a move. The former Aston Villa striker told AceOdds that an opportunity for Gordon to join his boyhood club might never come around again.

Discussing the potential move, Agbonlahor said: “I did some research on this and I think he’s a Liverpool fan, isn’t he? So, he’s a Liverpool fan, he played for Everton, he’s gone to Newcastle. I’m sorry, if you’re a Liverpool fan and they come in for you, they win the Champions League, they’re a more stable club.

“You’d say, new manager, new ideas, I think Anthony Gordon jumps at it. He didn’t think twice before leaving Everton. He sort of forced that move through to Newcastle, if I remember. The way Newcastle are at the moment, if I’m him I’m saying: ‘Goodbye, let me go to Liverpool, they’re my boyhood club’.

“He’s a Scouser, he can go back home, it’s a no-brainer, it’s the club he supports. I would go to Liverpool if I was Anthony Gordon, 100 per cent, because this offer might not come again.”

Gordon remains tied down to Newcastle until the summer of 2026 and Eddie Howe appears to be determined to keep him for the foreseeable future. Quizzed on the speculation at the end of July, the Magpies boss made it clear that he was not planning on losing Gordon any time soon.

“He’s been committed,” said Howe. “We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle. He’s such an important player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody.

“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions. In those last few weeks it was very, very difficult. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing. I’m confident he is OK. You can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch.”
