Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been warned that one Real Madrid player will be unhappy if he joins Los Blancos. The 25-year-old’s contract is currently due to expire at Liverpool next summer, and his future at Anfield remains in question.
New boss Arne Slot wants to see players earn their place in his plans, and is putting no pressure on Alexander-Arnold to put pen to paper. Remarkably, Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only star player out of contract as of July 2025 either, with captain Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also free to leave Merseyside then unless they sort an extension.
While Trent has vowed that Liverpool is his main priority for the 2024/25 campaign, an expiring contract means that Carlo Ancelotti can open talks with the versatile full-back as early as January. But Jamie Carragher has warned that one Galactico in particular won’t be happy should Alexander-Arnold be brought to the Bernabeu.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League fixture with Brentford, Jamie Redknapp said: “It’s a case of, ‘What do you want for the rest of your life?’
“Does Trent want to stay here for the rest of his career, or does he want to go and try something else. And if he does, when Real Madrid come calling, it’s very difficult for any player. I totally get that dilemma he’s in.
“He’s in the dream position as a footballer – 25 years of age, one year left on your contract, he could see how this year goes, he can wait until Christmas, I’m sure there will already be some dialogue with other clubs, let’s be honest, that’s how it works. It will be interesting how it plays out.”
However, Liverpool legend Carragher urged Trent to edge cautiously should Real Madrid come knocking any time soon, responding: “I think [Dani] Carvajal would have something to say about it as well, with people talking about Trent. He’s only won the European Cup six times and the Euros in the summer, so I don’t think he’d be too happy about it.”
Carvajal has been a long-serving right-back at Real Madrid
A stalwart at right-back, Carvajal has been at Real Madrid for 11 years now, racking up four La Liga titles, six Champions Leagues, two Copa del Reys and five UEFA Super Cups. And while he is 32 years old now, he has shown no signs of slowing down.
The successful Spaniard was a key part of his nation’s Euro 2024 campaign, lifting the trophy alongside his fellow countrymen after beating England 2-1 in the final. Should Alexander-Arnold make the move to Madrid, there’s no guarantee that he’ll get the nod at right-back ahead of Carvajal, especially considering all he has done for the club in his 418 appearances.
Should the England international choose to convert properly into a midfield role – a position in which Jurgen Klopp gave him gametime towards the end of his Liverpool tenure – there’s an array of other top players who could also oust him to the bench at the Bernabeu. Jude Bellingham has been setting La Liga alight since joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, while Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga have all impressed Ancelotti.
