Raheem Sterling has refused to rule out a move back to Liverpool in years gone by.

The winger has been informed that his future lies away from Chelsea recently, with Enzo Maresca even publicly putting the England international in the shop window by insisting that he looks for different attributes from his forwards.

Several European sides have been with the 29-year-old since, as well as Saudi Pro League teams, but Sterling is reportedly keen to remain in the Premier League. However, his wages of £325,000 a week are ruling the majority of clubs out of the running to secure his signature.

Liverpool are among a handful of clubs who may have the financial capabilities to sign Sterling, and the ex-Reds star hinted that a return could be on the cards during his time with Manchester City.

The forward left Liverpool in 2015 and teased the idea of a return five years later. In a Q&A session with his agency, Colossal Sports Management, he was asked if he would ever return to Liverpool, to which he replied: “Would I ever go back to Liverpool?

“To be honest with you I love Liverpool. Don’t get it twisted, they are always in my heart. It’s a team that has done a lot for me growing up so…”

Liverpool are in the market for at least one forward in the final week of the transfer window, with acquiring the services of another option on the right wing to rotate with Mohamed Salah.

However, the priorities on Merseyside largely centre around defensive reinforcements following the sale of Sepp van der Berg and Joe Gomez being heavily linked with a move elsewhere in search of more regular game time.

If Liverpool do opt to push to re-sign Sterling, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be open to striking a deal with a direct rival who are also aiming for a European spot as well – though that does not appear to be in the thinking of those at Stamford Bridge.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Blues have already offered Sterling to Aston Villa in the hope of stirring up interest from Unai Emery’s side. It is unclear whether the Villa Park outfit are open to striking a deal for the versatile forward or if they will explore alternative options, leaving the door open for other clubs to swoop late on.
