Gabriel Jesus has delivered a succinct yet powerful tribute to Ilkay Gundogan amidst the swirling rumours of his uncertain future at Barcelona. The former Manchester City star, who made the switch to Spain in the summer of 2023 rather than extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium, is now reportedly considering a Premier League comeback.

After just one season with the Blaugrana, Gundogan is open to an exit, a sentiment echoed by his ex-boss Pep Guardiola according to The Athletic. Talks have been initiated with Gundogan’s representatives by his old club, indicating that a pivotal choice looms for the 33-year-old midfielder.

Adding to the intrigue, Gundogan has also publicly announced his retirement from international football, sharing a heartfelt statement on Instagram: “Dear football Germany, After a few weeks of thinking, I came to the decision that it was time to end my national team career.”

Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride over his 82 caps for Germany, a feat he hadn’t envisioned when debuting in 2011. Among the flood of responses was a concise but telling comment from his former teammate Jesus, giving a glowing commendation and could potentially be open to a reunion in north London: “What a player.”

With Jesus’ commendation, Gundogan’s next move is highly anticipated. Although a return with Manchester City could be on the horizon, Arsenal remains a potential suitor, especially given their interest during last year’s period of uncertainty for the midfielder and the possible reconnection with Arteta.

Edu, Arsenal’s sporting director, is prioritising a deal for Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad before this weekend’s Premier League match against Aston Villa.

Should that transfer be finalised promptly, the Gunners could then shift their focus to potentially signing Gundogan, whose contract in Spain expires next summer. A reunion with Guardiola appears to be the most probable outcome, but if that doesn’t materialise, Arsenal could certainly pursue it, especially given Jesus’ evident admiration.
