Liverpool have reportedly seen a bid rejected for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in yet another blow to their summer transfer plans. Arne Slot is yet to welcome any new signings to Anfield despite the new Premier League campaign starting in just three days.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who was previously linked with Arsenal, was earmarked as a target for the Merseyside giants earlier this month. However, it has since emerged that he will not be moving to Liverpool after turning down the opportunity to make the switch.

It was then revealed that Liverpool had failed to sign Bordeaux youngster Mathys Angely, who is reportedly heading to Wolfsburg. The Reds now appear to have been knocked back in their efforts to land Mamardashvili, with Valencia said to have rejected their opening bid.

According to El Chiringuito, the Spanish side have turned down Liverpool’s advances but would be open to accepting an improved offer. It is said that Mamardashvili is valued at around £34million, with his agent set to meet with Valencia bosses in an attempt to work things out.

Liverpool are thought to be keen on signing a new goalkeeper, with Alisson Becker now the wrong side of 30 and Caoimhin Kelleher facing an uncertain future. The Reds are looking to put themselves in a strong position for years to come by investing in bright young talent.

Mamardashvili would like to join Liverpool after having his head turned by the reported interest from Merseyside, according to Fabrizio Romano. In the event of a successful move, he would reportedly be loaned out for his first season before returning to Anfield in the summer of 2025.

It is said that Valencia would be keen on taking him back on loan but Liverpool would prefer him to join a Premier League club in order to get him used to the trials and tribulations of English football.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will be able to kickstart their summer business by agreeing a deal to sign Mamardashvili over the coming days. Slot was quizzed on transfers after Saturday’s friendlies against Sevilla and Las Palmas but kept his cards close to his chest.

“I think I said as a club like we are, we’re always looking if we can strengthen the squad but it’s not so easy to strengthen if you saw both games today,” said the Dutchman.

“If we can, we will. I’ve said many times before that I’ve inherited a really strong team. If we can and if we think it’s possible, we will strengthen the squad but only if we think we can and if it’s possible.”
