Liverpool are in a tug-of-war with Real Sociedad over the signing of Martin Zubimendi. The Reds are hoping that the player will push for the move, which would aid negotiations between the clubs if they don’t activate his £51million release clause.

However, La Real are pulling out all the stops to persuade the Spain international to stay put, per the Mirror. The Spanish club are not keen on letting him go and don’t feel financially compelled to sell.

They’ve already sold defender Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer and are eager to prevent another top player from departing, though Mikel Merino could join Arsenal.

Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil is desperately trying to tempt Zubimendi, who has travelled to Germany for a pre-season friendly tomorrow, to stay in San Sebastian.

Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes have identified Zubimendi as a key target to strengthen their midfield.

Slot wants a more versatile player in a deep-lying role who can provide greater control and security in possession than Wataru Endo.

If they fail to secure Zubimendi, Liverpool have other targets in mind as Slot aims to construct a team more adept at possession-based football than Jurgen Klopp’s pressing style.

Zubimendi gained recognition when he replaced the injured Rodri during half-time of the Euro 2024 final, helping Spain defeat England.

The prospect of Champions League football could sway Zubimendi, as Real Sociedad are not participating in Europe’s premier competition this season.

The midfielder’s representative is Inaki Ibanez, who also manages Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. Hughes had previously worked with Ibanez when he signed Iraola for Bournemouth last year.
