Man Utd are expected to sign Matthijs de Ligt.
Manchester United are expected to complete deals for Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer, according to reports. However, the Red Devils have plenty of work to do to navigate past Bayern’s hefty valuation amid financial limitations imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
United completed promising early summer business, sealing a £36.5million deal for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee to mark the start of INEOS’ rule over recruitment.
A huge coup then followed, convincing Lille defender Leny Yoro to switch to Old Trafford in a £52m move, beating Real Madrid, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain to his signature.
United were thought to be planning on a second centre-back arrival before the 18-year-old broke his foot during last month’s friendly match against Arsenal, ruling him out for three months.
His unfortunate setback has intensified the need for Erik ten Hag to bolster his defence, though, and prompted an opening approach to Bayern.
The Bundesliga giants reportedly rebuffed a double deal proposal involving both De Ligt and Mazraoui despite informing both players they are free to leave this summer.
However, Fabrizio Romano reports that United are still expected to secure the services of both before the summer transfer deadline.
Man Utd have had one Matthijs de Ligt bid rejected.
Bayern are said to be demanding a combined £60m, though, a fee which United aren’t willing to meet as talks between the two clubs continue.
The Red Devils may need to sanction further sales to fund the double swoop, adding to the near-£50m raised from offloading four senior stars so far this summer.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s planned switch to West Ham United will open the door for Mazraoui, but De Ligt is the less attainable of the two targets.
And United could rely on cashing in on Scott McTominay – the subject of strong interest from Fulham and Galatasaray – to raise the budget high enough to afford the Dutch defender.
The Old Trafford giants are also reportedly listening to offers for Victor Lindelof, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Jadon Sancho.
Ten Hag, speaking after United’s final pre-season game against Liverpool on Sunday, confirmed he was optimistic that more signings were on the way.
“It is always difficult to say. We hope. We are always looking, and this new leadership team is really eager to do business and make deals,” Ten Hag explained.
“They are on it. But we have to wait if the timing is there and if the opportunities are there.”
