Riccardo Calafiori is expected to join Arsenal over the coming days
Arsenal are expected to confirm the signing of Riccardo Calafiori over the coming days and will be keen to continue strengthening Mikel Arteta’s squad. The Gunners missed out on the Premier League title by just two points last season and will be well aware that they can bridge that gap with some excellent summer business. Express Sport looks at who they might sign next.
Mikel Merino
Former Newcastle midfielder Merino has been linked with Arsenal for the past couple of years. An intelligent box-to-box midfielder, he would fit into Arteta’s team as a No 8.
However, Merino is widely reported to be very happy at Real Sociedad, who he joined from Newcastle in 2018. He might cost a hefty fee.
Fabian Ruiz
Arsenal are reported to have held talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Ruiz, who shone for Spain at Euro 2024. The Transfers Podcast claimed that the Gunners are even open to a loan move with an obligation to buy, in a similar deal to the one that saw them sign goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford.
Ruiz, 28, is a versatile midfielder who would provide excellent depth for Arteta. However, it is understood that Arsenal would need to offload at least one of Thomas Partey or Jorginho for a transfer to take place.
Nico Williams
Spanish stars have dominated Arsenal’s transfer agenda this summer. The addition of Williams would take the Gunners’ attack up a level, providing an upgrade on the left wing. Some fans have concerns over the consistency of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Williams, 22, struck Spain’s opening goal in their Euro 2024 triumph against England. He was excellent throughout the tournament, building on his form for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.
Arsenal can upgrade in attack by signing Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao
Victor Osimhen
It is widely believed that Arsenal would benefit from signing a world-class striker. One of their long-term targets for the No 9 role is the prolific Napoli forward Osimhen.
The Italian side have always held out for a hefty fee for the Nigerian, with some reports claiming that they might want around £100m. Arsenal are unlikely to pay such a fee for the second year in a row, having paid slightly more for Declan Rice last summer.
Ollie Watkins
Arsenal may have a chance of signing Ollie Watkins this summer. Despite his 19 Premier League goals firing Aston Villa into the Premier League, the England star has been linked with a departure.
Villa may be tempted to sell for a big fee this summer, having spent a considerable sum themselves on new signings. Arsenal could be the perfect destination for the striker.
